[A strain of the human papillomavirus virus, (HPV16), has been directly linked to cervical cancer and is significantly associated with invasiveness. The papillomavirus virus constitutes a protein coat (capsid) surrounding a circular, double-stranded DNA organised into coding and non-coding regions, and induces skin and mucosal epithelial lesions. Progression from low- to high-grade neoplasia is often associated with the integration of the HPV16 virus genome into the host chromosome. The event occurs with disruption or deletion of the E2 ORF followed by inactivation of the E2 regulatory protein. ( NCI )]
