[Serotonin 5-HT-3 Receptor, encoded by the human HTR3 gene, is one of the several different receptors for serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), a biogenic hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter, a hormone, and a mitogen. Whereas all other known serotonin receptor subtypes are G protein-coupled receptors, this receptor is a ligand-gated ion channel, which when activated causes fast, depolarizing responses in neurons. It is a cation-specific, but otherwise relatively nonselective, ion channel. Two isoforms, 1/5-HT3R-AS and 2/5-HT3R-AL, are produced by alternative splicing. (From OMIM, Swiss-Prot and NCI) ( NCI )]
