[Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is an integral membrane protein that is highly expressed on the surface of prostate epithelial cells and tumor-associated vascular endothelia. It is also expressed on the vascular endothelium of a number of tumor types. PSMA gene has been cloned through detection with a monoclonal antibody raised against the human prostatic carcinoma cell line LNCaP. Subsequently, PSMA gene was shown to be identical to glutamate carboxypepidase II (GCP2) gene, and to encode a type II transmembrane protein with folate hydrolase and N-acetylated-alpha-linked-acidic dipeptidase (NAALAdase) activity.
