[Encoded by BIRC3 Gene (IAP Family) Baculoviral IAP Repeat-Containing Protein 3 inhibits apoptosis by binding to TNF Receptor-associated factors TRAF1 and TRAF2, probably by interfering with activation of ICE-like proteases. BIRC3 inhibits apoptosis induced by serum deprivation but does not affect apoptosis resulting from exposure to menadione, a potent inducer of free radicals. The amino acid sequence predicts three baculovirus IAP repeat domains and a ring-type zinc finger domain while the Zn binding domain is involved in protein-protein interactions in caspase inhibition and spindle assembly. BIRC3 is present in many fetal and adult tissues and mainly expressed in adult skeletal muscle, thymus, testis, ovary, and pancreas, low or absent in brain and peripheral blood leukocytes. ( NCI )]
