Composed of small 40S and large 60S subunits containing 4 rRNAs and approximately 80 proteins, ribosomes catalyze protein synthesis. S27 appears to be located near ribosomal protein S18 and to be covalently linked to translation initiation factor eIF3. S27 contains a C4-type zinc finger domain and is able to bind to nucleic acid.
