- [A radiopharmaceutical containing methylene diphosphonate (medronate; MDP) complexed with the gamma-emitting radionuclide technetium Tc 99m with potential bone imaging activity. Upon intravenous administration, skeletal uptake of Tc 99m MDP occurs as a function of skeletal blood flow and is related to osteogenic activity. The medronate moiety of this agent has affinity for hydroxyapatite crystals in bone with abnormal accumulation at sites with increased osteoid mineralization. Labeling with Tc 99m allows localization and visualization of areas in which skeletal uptake of Tc 99m is impaired, such as in areas of abnormal osteogenesis. - [A liposomal formulation containing a muramyl dipeptide (MDP) analogue with potential immunomodulatory activity. Muramyl tripeptide phosphatidylethanolamine (MTP-PE), a derivative of the mycobacterial cell wall component MDP, activates both monocytes and macrophages. Activated macrophages secrete cytokines as well as induce recruitment and stimulation of other immune cells, thereby, producing indirect tumoricidal effects.
