[G Protein-Coupled Receptor 68, encoded by the GPR68 gene, belongs to family 1 of G-protein coupled receptors. This integral membrane protein is a receptor for sphingosylphosphorylcholine and couples to G proteins that stimulate phosphoinositide hydrolysis. It acts as a proton-sensing receptor stimulating inositol phosphate formation and is involved in pH homeostasis. The skeleton participates in pH homeostasis as a buffering organ and osteoblasts respond to pH changes in the physiologic range. This receptor represents an osteoblastic pH sensor regulating cell-mediated responses to acidosis in bone. (from Swiss-Prot and OMIM) ( NCI )]
