[Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 2, encoded by the FABP2 gene, belongs to the fatty-acid binding protein (FABP) family thought to play a role in the intracellular transport of long-chain fatty acids and their acyl-CoA esters. Intestinal fatty acid-binding protein 2 gene contains four exons and is an abundant cytosolic protein in small intestine epithelial cells. The FABP2 gene has a polymorphism in position 54, which changes Ala-54 (71% of the population) to Thr-54 (29%). The Thr-54 allele has a 2-fold greater affinity for long-chain fatty acids than the Ala-54 allele. Thr-54 is associated with increased fat oxidation and insulin resistance.
