[Expressed in lung, brain, heart, liver, placenta, monocytes, peripheral leukocytes, and CD11c+ immature dendritic cells by human TLR8 Gene (TLR Family), 1041-aa 120-kDa (precursor) type I membrane protein Toll-Like Receptor 8 contains a TIR domain and 24 LRR repeats. TLR8 has a fundamental role in pathogen recognition and activation of innate immunity to microbial agents. Sharing structural and functional similarities, highly conserved TLRs recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns expressed on infectious agents and mediate cytokine production necessary for effective immunity. TLR8 likely acts via MyD88 (TIR interaction) and TRAF6, leading to NF-kappa-B activation, cytokine secretion and the inflammatory response. (NCI) ( NCI )]
