[A variety of neoplasms arising from the skull base may affect the CNS, mainly by expansion, causing optic nerve and hypothalamic symptoms. Most frequent are pituitary adenomas, which are traditionally not grouped together with CNS tumors. Other, less frequent lesions in this region include granular cell tumors of the pituitary stalk and chordomas. Craniopharyngiomas are also included in this group. (Adapted from WHO.) ( NCI )]
