[A radioactive isotope of iodine, a nonmetallic element of the halogen group, with an atomic mass of 123 and a half-life of 13.2 hours with radioimaging property. Selectively accumulating in thyroid glands, iodine I 123 emits gamma rays that can be captured by gamma radiography of the areas taking up the radioactive iodine, and allows assessment of thyroid function. When coupled with other compounds, such as a monoclonal antibody, iodine I 123 can be used for tissue-specific radioimaging and therapy. ( NCI )]
